What causes skin tags on neck?

Skin tags, also referred to as soft fibromas or acrochordons are benign, harmless growths that usually appear in random areas of your body. It could be armpits, neck, eyelids or even private parts of your body. Their color is usually skin tone, black or brown. You'd find them hanging from the surface of the skin with a thin root tissue which is known as a "stalk".

While the doctors aren't really sure about the exact cause of skin tags, however there are some theories do make sense.

  1. Human papillomavirus (HPV) - Although it is known to be a cause for warts but according to the research it has also been found in skin tags.
  2. Hormonal imbalance - Severe hormonal fluctuations such as the ones that happen during pregnancy also result into skin tags but most of them go away on their own.
  3. Ageing - As we get older, the skin loses elasticity. This lack of elasticity results into formation of skin tags in areas where there the skin folds, such as armpits, eyelids, neck etc.
  4. Insulin resistance - According to some studies, there has been a relation between insulin resistance and skin tags. Which means people who have higher insulin growth factor levels and receptors are more likely to develop skin tags.

Remedies for skin tags on neck

  1. Apple cider vinegar: Firstly, cleanse the area where you have the skin tag. Then soak a cotton ball in the apple cider vinegar solution. Place the cotton ball on top of the skin tag along with a bandage to keep it in place for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Remove the bandage and wash the area. Repeat this process daily as it may take couple of weeks for the acid in apple cider vinegar to break down the skin tag tissue.
  2. Freshly crushed garlic: Be prepared for this one because you're gonna have to be a real garlic lover to go through this method but it might be worth it. Apply the crushed garlic to your skin tag and cover it with the bandage. You'll need to leave it overnight, everyday. Eventually the skin tag may start shrinking or may even go away completely. If you can stand the garlic smell, you can stand the test of time.
  3. Tea tree oil: Due to its antifungal and antiviral properties, tea tree oil is generally considered safe for your skin. Simply apply it on the skin tag and cover it with the bandage overnight. Repeat the process until the skin tag dries out and falls off naturally.
  4. Vitamin E: Best known for its antioxidant properties, when you apply Vitamin E to your skin tag, you may even see the skin tag growth disappear within just a few days.
  5. Cryotherapy: It is a process in which very cold temperature is used to remove the skin tag. Mostly liquid nitrogen is used but in some cases cold aerosol sprays are also used depending on the skin type and condition. Cryotherapy can treat several types of skin conditions such as skin tags, warts, moles, actinic keratosis and, angiomas. In most cases the process is as simple as snipping the skin tags with surgical scissors and having a single cryotherapy session. It is recommended that you have your doctor perform this procedure and not do it at home.
  6. Surgical excision: This is sort of a minor surgery where your doctor will use surgical scissors to cut off the stalk through which the skin tag hangs off of. Even though there is bleeding involved, but this process isn't that painless, especially if you have a small skin tag that you want removed.
  7. Electrocautery: Devices such as Aven Buzz Skin Tag Remover Pen can help you perform this procedure right from the comfort of your home. In this process the skin tag is simply burned off using a probe which causes it to fall off. At the doctors office, this procedure costs a lot as compared to if you'd like to do it at home.
