Why Do I Have Skin Tags?

You probably have skin tags because:

  • Genetics can play a huge role sometimes. If your family has a history of skin tags, your chances of getting them are higher too.
  • Obesity can also result into skin tags. This is because the more weight you carry, the more skin folds you have. And the more skin folds you have, there can be more skin tags due to skin rubbing against itself.
  • Skin disorders such as Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome can cause skin tags in some cases.
  • Diabetes is also known to cause skin tags.

Common areas where you may have skin tags:

  • Armpits
  • Eyelids
  • Genitals
  • Groin
  • Thighs
  • Neck
  • Under the breasts

If you're considering getting your skin tags removed, you should first have them checked out by your doctor to make sure if the skin growth you have is really a skin tag. Especially if you developed it all of a sudden.

Some skin growths can look like skin tags, with which you should be very cautious before considering the removal process. Some of them include:

  • Moles
  • Warts
  • Genital Warts
  • Seborrheic keratosis
  • Melanoma (skin cancer)

Once you're sure of the fact that the skin growth that you have is a skin tag, there's a lot of options out there. Of course, the safest one is getting the skin tag removed by your doctor. Keep in mind that in most cases the insurance companies do not cover the skin tag removal process because it is considered cosmetic in nature. Unless your skin tag happens to cause issues such as bleeding, pain, or irritation. In cases like that, the chances are higher that the insurance company might cover it as it possesses threat to your overall health.

Your doctor can remove the skin tags using:

  • A scalpel
  • Liquid nitrogen
  • Heat (cauterization)
